Deworming for puppies

Puppies need worm treatments at the age of two weeks. Worm treatments destroys the worms in the intestinal track and in other organs. Usually worms are transmitted to puppies from its mother. There are several types of worm infestations in puppies. Most common types are:

  • Round worms
  • hook worms
  • tape worms
  • whip worms

Some of these worms like hook worms are zoonotic and can affect to the human also.

Most of the puppies don’t show the signs of worm infestation. Common signs of worm infestation in puppies are poor hair coat, pet bellied appearance, soft stools or diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy and weight loss.

The worm treatment scheduled start at 2 weeks of age. The treatment should be repeated after 2 weeks as worm eggs hatches because worm treatment is effective only for adult worms.

Up to age of 3 months worm treatment is given every two weeks. After 3 months. The worm treatment is given once a month up to 9 months. After 9 months usual adult worm treatments are given.
