Is your dog scratching its ears or shaking its head?

You notice your dog shaking its head again, then catch a smell from one ear. Cleaning harder or buying the same drops used last time may seem sensible. But ear problems can have different causes, and the right treatment starts with finding this one.

Signs worth checking

Repeated scratching, head shaking, redness, discharge or an unpleasant smell can point to inflammation of the ear canal. One ear or both may hurt. Arrange a veterinary examination promptly. A head tilt, loss of balance or severe pain needs urgent attention; do not force a painful ear open.

It is not always ear mites

Allergies, something lodged in the ear, parasites, yeast and bacteria can contribute. Dark material alone does not prove there are mites. Repeated infections may have an underlying cause that also needs treatment. Tell the vet about skin itching, recent bathing and previous ear medicines.

Why the vet checks before prescribing

The vet may inspect the canal and eardrum and examine a sample of discharge. Treatment depends on those findings. An eardrum problem can affect which products are safe. Do not reuse leftover drops or someone else’s medicine simply because the ear looks similar.

Safe ear care at home

  • Avoid cotton buds inside the canal. They can push debris further in or cause injury.
  • Ask the vet which cleaner to use, whether cleaning is appropriate now, and how often. Do not put oils, peroxide or home mixtures into a sore ear.
  • Keep water out of the ears during bathing. Ask for a demonstration if cleaning is part of the treatment plan.
  • Use prescribed treatment for the instructed duration and attend the recheck, even if the smell improves. Contact the clinic if pain or discharge worsens.
