Notice more than bad breath
Arrange a check for persistent bad breath, drooling, dropping food, unusual chewing, loose teeth or reduced appetite. Mouth bleeding, swelling or obvious pain also need prompt veterinary advice. Be careful: a painful pet may bite.
Build a gentle habit
Ask your vet to demonstrate tooth brushing and recommend suitable dental products. Introduce handling gradually and aim for daily brushing when your pet accepts it. If the mouth seems painful, get it checked before trying to brush.
Understand professional care
Brushing does not replace an examination. Disease may be hidden below the gumline. Your veterinarian can explain whether a dental procedure is needed, why anaesthesia may be necessary, and the likely costs and aftercare.
