Keep one record for each pet
- Keep the clinic-issued vaccination card safely and take a clear photo as a backup.
- Ask the veterinary team to write down the next due date and set a reminder.
- If records are missing or a vaccination is overdue, arrange a review rather than guessing what was given.
Plan prevention with your veterinarian
Ask the clinic to confirm the vaccinations and timing appropriate for your pet. Sri Lanka’s Epidemiology Unit recommends annual rabies vaccination for dogs and maintaining records for all pets, including cats.
After a bite or possible exposure
If a person is bitten or scratched, wash the wound thoroughly with soap and running water and seek medical care immediately. Saliva entering broken skin, the eyes or mouth also needs prompt medical advice. Do not delay care while looking for the animal’s records. If your pet is bitten by a stray, wild or suspected rabid animal, contact a veterinarian promptly and avoid contact with saliva.
